PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT | Photography by Brenda Colwell

Why do you need a Head Shot Anyway? Because we live in a world where our customers find us online, and every serious professional has a current head shot ready to go for all of their marketing efforts. Your professional headshot is an important element of your online personal brand. It allows others to connect a face with a virtual identity.  Placing a photo of yourself in key places is the only way to effectively trademark yourself.  In your business network, where familiarity is the essence of networking, it gives automatic credibility to what you do for a living. And the more professional your head shot, the more professional you are perceived to be.

And when I say headshot, it is not that is "nice enough" image that your friend took last summer at the Bluegrass Festival, and it is not that gre Acting HeadshotActing Headshot at photo of you hiking (unless you are in the hiking business). A headshot is a professionally lit, shot, and prepared series of images you use for your own personal branding. So, when someone initiates an internet search on you or your business, they will find your face and connect you locally, transforming your virtual you into the real you.

It is a worthy investment to spend time with a professional photographer skilled at positioning your body and helping you with your  expressions, posture and clothing to obtain the most flattering image, even for the most camera shy.

Now that you are convinced of the importance of your headshot, think about where you can make your face visible.  Here are a dozen places to include it:

1.  Social-networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, plus all the other web sites you use for building visibility and  connecting with others (think professional memberships and directories).  It is a core element of your standard profile.

2. Your e-mail signature:  This is a great place to make your e-mails more personal.

3.  Your blog:   If you have a blog or traditional web site, you should post your photo along with your stories and comments.

4. Flickr and other photo-archiving sites.

5. Web-bookmarking sites like Digg and StumbleUpon

6. Your comments on other websites and blogs within your fields of expertise.

7. ZoomInfo:  This is an aggregator that takes content from all over the web and creates a web site for you.  If you have not claimed your profile, go to zoominfo.com, claim your profile, clean it up (it likely contains content that is not related to you) and post your headshot.

 8. Skype - It is great for people to connect a face with a voice.  Upload your photo on Skype, especially if you don't have a webcam to make video calls and for those days that you Skype in your pajamas.

9.  Dating Sites - Even dating sites talk about your profession, so the more professional you look, the more desirable you become,  it's true.

10.  www.visittelluride.com also allows you to upload an image with advertising and events.

11.  Local publications such as Telluride Magazine, Telluride Style, The Watch and The Daily Planet prefer professional high- resolution photos for publication.
